APAC Green Hydrogen Alliance
Catalysing policy leadership and financing for renewable and genuinely low-carbon hydrogen in the Asia-Pacific region
The Asia Pacific Green Hydrogen Alliance is a community that unites companies and organisations, across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region in the mission of accelerated adoption of green and truly low-carbon hydrogen in our energy supply chains.
Established by the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) and Breakthrough Energy, the alliance is a free membership network focused on scaling the green hydrogen ecosystem in APAC through enabling policy measures and financing incentives; accelerating sustainable production, use and trade of green hydrogen; and catalysing financing for green hydrogen projects and infrastructure.
It will initially focus on countries with advanced green hydrogen strategies: Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea.
The alliance is bringing together government, industry, finance and civil society to increase regional collaboration to:
- Support enabling policy measures and financing incentives
- Accelerate sustainable production, use and trade
- Catalyse financing for green hydrogen projects
With the aim of creating an enabling policy and capital environment to catalyse large scale projects, APAC:
- Convenes government, industry, finance and civil society leaders in the region to drive commitments towards accelerated green hydrogen project development.
- Articulates, communicates and raises awareness of regional green hydrogen potential and market opportunities.
- Identifies financing needs, opportunities and solutions, to be developed and applied at regional and country level.
- Identifies flagship green hydrogen projects to be showcased and presented to investors.
- Puts in place strong regulatory and export frameworks to maximise the benefits of green hydrogen development.
- Develops guidance and good practices on legislation, regulations and contracting, planning and permitting, fiscal terms and incentives, land use and infrastructure access, community consultation and transparency, socio-economic impact, pricing and offtake agreements, standards and certification.
- Identifies potential trade corridors within the region and to the global market and connect suppliers to offtakers.
- Identifies domestic market opportunities to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries.
Achievements
The APAC Green Hydrogen Alliance has made significant strides in accelerating renewable energy, green hydrogen, and green ammonia adoption across the Asia-Pacific region. With a focus on Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea initially, the Alliance has achieved the following milestones:
-
Indonesia: The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GH2 to collaborate on implementing Indonesia’s national hydrogen strategy, given the huge potential for green hydrogen development in the country.
-
Australia: Actively promoting green iron and steel standards and detailed recommendations made to the Australian government to enhance the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive.
-
South Korea: In partnership with corporate members like Hyundai and Korea Zinc and partners at H2 Korea, organised an industry roundtable in Seoul in April 2024. This initiative led to the creation of a policy paper submitted to the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy to inform their clean hydrogen auction scheme.
-
Japan: Hosted a roundtable in Tokyo in August 2024 with over 40 industry stakeholders to discuss the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme for hydrogen adoption. This effort culminated in a comprehensive white paper outlining how Japan can transition into a true ‘green hydrogen’ society.
GH2 invites government, finance, industry and civil society to join the alliance to contribute to the accelerated use and production of renewable and responsible green hydrogen.
GH2 is a non-profit organisation dedicated to accelerating the production and use of green hydrogen globally.
Supporting the APAC Green Hydrogen Alliance is simple, inclusive, and free of charge. By joining, your organisation will affirm its commitment to addressing climate change and advancing sustainable energy solutions within your country and the APAC region. Together, we can support the journey toward a carbon-neutral future.
The alliance has been established in partnership with Breakthrough Energy.
