GH2 member CWP Global reaches major milestone for AMAN green hydrogen project in Mauritania

GH2 member CWP Global and the Government of Mauritania have signed a Global Convention for the AMAN green hydrogen project, marking an important step in the development of one of Africa’s largest proposed green hydrogen projects.

The agreement was signed on 16 September by CWP Global and Mauritania’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum. It is the first Global Convention signed for a green hydrogen project in Mauritania and establishes the contractual framework for the next stages of AMAN’s development and implementation.

CWP launched the AMAN project in 2020, followed by a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Mauritania in 2021 and a subsequent Framework Agreement. The project has since progressed alongside the development of Mauritania’s green hydrogen regulatory framework. In 2024, Mauritania introduced a dedicated Green Hydrogen Code.

AMAN is expected to produce approximately 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which could be converted into a range of derivatives for domestic and international markets. This includes potential production of up to 6.6 million tonnes of green ammonia per year, with applications across fertilisers, maritime transport and other industries. The project could also support the production of green iron using Mauritania’s domestic iron ore resources.

Mark Crandall, Chairman of CWP Global, described the agreement as a “defining and historic moment” and said the company has advanced AMAN to FEED-ready status, with a Final Investment Decision being targeted for first production by 2030.

The Mauritanian Government has highlighted the wider industrial potential of the sector. Taghiya Abeiderahmane, Director of Low Carbon Hydrogen at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, said the country aims to use green hydrogen as a driver of industrialisation and economic diversification, creating new value chains around Mauritania’s natural and renewable resources.

Mauritania is a founding member of the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), which GH2 supports in advancing green hydrogen development and cooperation across the continent.
