ROTTERDAM - At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam today, the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) and Trovio Operating Pty Ltd (Trovio) announce they have entered a strategic partnership to develop a Global Registry for Green Hydrogen and Green Hydrogen Derivative Certification.

The platform will provide certainty and transparency to producers, customers, investors and other stakeholders that green hydrogen is exactly that: hydrogen made with renewable electricity which conforms to the highest standards on emissions, ESG and the sustainable development goals.

Powered by Trovio’s CorTenX purpose built, API driven environmental registry, for the first time the industry will have an efficient, streamlined workflow to support the capture and retention of provenance data throughout the supply chain to meet the required standards for the issuance, trade and retirement of green hydrogen and green hydrogen derivative certificates, including green ammonia, green methanol and synthetic methane.

This will also enable producers, traders and customers to ensure alignment with national and regional schemes such as the EU’s Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) requirements under the Renewable Energy Directive and forthcoming tax credit provisions under the US Inflation Reduction Act 2022.

Green hydrogen projects that meet the Green Hydrogen Standard™ (“the standard”) will be licensed to use the label “GH2 Green Hydrogen” and will be eligible to obtain and trade GH2 certificates of origin for green hydrogen and derivatives such as green ammonia.

The register is targeting Q1 2025 to be live with a fully operational and integrated platform for the creation, issuance, data retention and transacting of certificates.

Green hydrogen producers which are demonstrating leadership through implementing the Green Hydrogen Standard include Fortescue’s PECEM project in Brazil; HyStor Energy’s Mississippi Clean Hydrogen Hub, Adani and TES. These companies will benefit from the seamless global certification registry this new partnership will deliver.

GH2 CEO Jonas Moberg said: “Consistent and truly low carbon hydrogen standards are essential to address the climate crisis and to stimulate global trade and market confidence. Several regulatory frameworks and certification systems defining the sustainability attributes of green, clean and low carbon hydrogen are currently being developed, but there is a growing risk that lack of alignment will lead to market fragmentation. This new registry will allow project developers and their customers to demonstrate compliance with the Green Hydrogen Standard and several regulatory regimes, derisking projects that will support the development of global markets”.

“Trovio brings outstanding energy sector and technological expertise to the table. Working together with companies at the forefront the green hydrogen economy, this project will provide greater certainty and transparency that green hydrogen is exactly that: hydrogen made with renewable electricity which conforms to the highest standards on emissions, ESG and the sustainable development goals.”

Trovio CEO Jon Deane said “Trovio is pleased to be working with GH2, project developers and their customers to help ensure that new hydrogen production is truly environmentally and socially sustainable. Trovio’s proprietary technology solutions have been developed specifically for environmental assets and are being utilised across both the public and private sector. We believe this new registry in partnership with GH2 will help build confidence in this critical and growing industry and ultimately foster acceleration in the adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

GH2 Director of the Green Hydrogen Standard Sam Bartlett said: “Green hydrogen producers and customers need clarity and consistency in order to plan for the long term. Adherence to emissions and sustainability standards will strongly influence project development, hydrogen pricing and export opportunities. This new registry provides project developers and their customers with a highly credible, globally recognized platform that can be used to demonstrate their alignment with national standards and global best practice”.

About the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2)

The Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) is a global non-profit foundation incorporated in Switzerland. GH2 was established in 2021 to dramatically accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen and to differentiate green hydrogen from production pathways based on fossil fuels. Green hydrogen made from renewables is the most sustainable hydrogen production pathway for sectors that need it to urgently to reduce their climate impact including steel, chemicals, fertilizers, shipping and aviation. GH2 is a multistakeholder organisation with a wide range of corporate members, government and civil society partners. In addition to its office in Geneva, GH2 has a presence in Beijing, Chennai, Jakarta, London, Nairobi, Oslo and Perth. Visit www.gh2.org for more information.

About the Green Hydrogen Standard

The Green Hydrogen Standard was launched in May 2022. It requires that renewable electricity is used to produce electrolytic green hydrogen and its derivatives; includes an emissions threshold aligned with net zero; and incorporates sustainability criteria to ensure green hydrogen projects have a positive impact on the communities where they are located. The Standard helps companies comply with national and regional schemes such as EU RFNBO and US IRA Production Tax Credits. An updated version of the Green Hydrogen Standard was launched at COP28 in December 2023 which includes protocols on green ammonia, green methanol and synthetic methane; addresses hydrogen leakage; and a prequalification option for early stage projects. Green hydrogen projects that meet the Green Hydrogen Standard (“the standard”) will be licensed to use the label “GH2 Green Hydrogen” and will be eligible to obtain and trade GH2 certificates of origin for green hydrogen and derivatives such as green ammonia.
