Soaring ahead with Solar Hydrogen - First steps toward accelerating solar-based green hydrogen production

14 November 2022, 15:00 - 16:30 (ISA Pavilion)

Organizing Team

  • International Solar Alliance
  • Asian Development Bank
  • Green Hydrogen Organisation (Co-Host)

Context

Solar energy is a key source of electricity for producing green hydrogen. The low-cost availability of solar power in many countries can play a vital role in driving down the costs of green hydrogen production. Within the regions with vast irradiance, solar hydrogen can provide a cost-competitive zero-carbon based energy economy for developing countries.

This will be achieved by -

  • Massive ramp-up of solar energy targets in countries
  • Identifying and strengthening solar hydrogen supply chains
  • Creating domestic demand, development, and export opportunities
  • Addressing existing barriers and learning from the maturing curve of solar energy

The ISA Secretariat and the Asian Development Bank, are collaborating under ADB’s Knowledge and Support Technical Assistance, in implementing  ISA’s programme – “Solar for Green Hydrogen”. The objective is to assess and develop a strategy to scale up green hydrogen production and deployment, particularly in developing countries and emerging economies. This includes identifying and creating global synergies for knowledge exchange, infrastructure development, assessment and facilitation of ecosystem readiness, and identification of ready-to-invest projects in the near to mid-terms.

The Green Hydrogen Organisation (GHO) is dedicated to accelerating the production and use of green hydrogen by bringing governments, development finance institutions and other stakeholders to increase support for green hydrogen production and use in various countries and emerging markets.

ISA, ADB and GHO are collaborating to expand solar-based hydrogen projects across countries of common operations.
