Papua New Guinea
Green Hydrogen Vision
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is exploring the potential of green hydrogen as part of its broader commitment to diversifying its energy sources and addressing climate change. With vast renewable energy resources, including solar, hydropower, and geothermal, PNG envisions leveraging these assets to produce green hydrogen for domestic and international markets. The country sees green hydrogen as crucial in reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, improving energy security, and driving sustainable development. By developing a green hydrogen economy, PNG aims to position itself as a key player in the emerging global hydrogen market, attract investment, and create new industries and jobs. This vision aligns with the nation’s broader energy strategy to transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy systems while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

Policy Spotlight
In 2021, Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest asserted he could "revolutionise" Papua New Guinea (PNG) into a leader of energy transition, unveiling plans to harness hydro and geothermal energy for extensive green hydrogen production in the region. Forrest’s Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) entered a development agreement with the Papua New Guinea government to conduct feasibility studies for seven hydro and eleven geothermal projects in the Pacific Island nation. FFI stated that these projects in Papua New Guinea have the potential to generate as much as 2.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually
